Desire Is Not Direction

Devotional

One of the most subtle traps we fall into is believing that because we want something, God must want it for us too. It feels right. It feels urgent. And so we move toward it, sometimes without ever stopping to ask if God is actually in it. When Satan tempted Jesus in the wilderness, each temptation was built around something that seemed reasonable on the surface. Food after fasting. Protection from harm. Authority over kingdoms. None of those things are inherently wrong. But the path Satan offered to get there was completely outside of God’s will.

Jesus did not take the bait. He responded each time with the Word of God, not with His feelings, not with logic, and not with what seemed fair. He trusted that God’s way, even the harder way, was the right way. We can want something deeply and still say no. We can feel an emotion and choose not to act on it. Desire is real, but it is not always direction. The question is not just what do I want, but what does God want for me?

When you are facing a decision and something feels urgent, slow down. Take it to God. Take it to His Word. Because the right path and the easy path are not always the same road, and God’s way is always worth the wait.

Bible Verse

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” – Matthew 4:4

Reflection Question

Is there something you are currently pursuing because it feels right, but you have not fully surrendered it to God in prayer?

Just because you want something doesn’t mean God wants you to have it. Desire is not the same as direction. -Pastor Jen

Prayer

God, help me to want Your will more than my own. Give me the wisdom to tell the difference between my desires and Your direction. Amen.
