Stop Looking Back

Devotional

When the Israelites left Egypt, they were free. The chains were gone, the taskmasters were behind them, and God was leading them forward into something new. But freedom on the outside does not automatically mean freedom on the inside. They kept looking back, longing for what they had left behind, even though what was behind them was slavery. It sounds strange, but we do the same thing. We hold onto old seasons, old wounds, old versions of ourselves, not because they were good, but because they were familiar. And familiarity can feel safer than the unknown, even when the unknown is where God is leading. You cannot move forward while you are constantly looking back. It is like driving a car while staring in the rearview mirror. The car will go where your eyes go, and if your eyes are fixed on the past, that is exactly where you will stay. Forgetting what is behind does not mean pretending it never happened. It means refusing to let it steer. Your experiences shaped you, and God can use every single one of them. But they are meant to be part of your story, not the whole story. Today, consider where your eyes are fixed. What are you still looking back at that is keeping you from stepping into what God has ahead? He is not back there. He is out in front, and He is inviting you to follow.

Bible Verse

“I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 3:14

Reflection Question

What from your past are you still mentally living in, and what might it look like to take one practical step toward releasing your grip on it?
