Devotional
Authority begins at home. The way we view and respond to our parents shapes how we’ll interact with every other authority figure in our lives. Think about it – our parents are our first encounter with leadership, boundaries, and guidance. They’re like the training wheels for understanding authority. When we learn to honor our parents, we’re not just following a rule; we’re developing a life skill that will impact every relationship and institution we encounter. This principle is so important that God made it one of the Ten Commandments. It’s not about having perfect parents or being perfect children – it’s about respecting the role and office of parenthood, even when it’s challenging.
Bible Verse
“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. ‘Honor your father and mother’ (this is the first commandment with a promise), ‘that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.’ Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.” – Ephesians 6:1-4
Reflection Question
How has your relationship with your parents influenced the way you respond to other authority figures in your life?
Quote
“If you struggle to honor the office of mother and father, then you will struggle to honor all other authority in your life.”
Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me understand the importance of honoring my parents and give me the strength to respect their role in my life, even when it’s difficult. Guide me in developing a healthy view of authority that reflects Your perfect leadership. Amen.
