Devotional
When Jesus told the paralyzed man ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ He wasn’t just offering comfort—He was declaring war on every religious system that demands performance for acceptance. The religious leaders were outraged because they understood what Jesus was claiming: exclusive authority to forgive sins. This wasn’t about adding another option to their religious menu; it was about replacing their entire system. Every man-made religion operates on the same principle: perform to our standard, and God will accept you. But Jesus shattered this foundation by offering forgiveness based solely on relationship with Him, not religious achievement. This is revolutionary because it means your acceptance isn’t dependent on how well you follow rules, attend services, or measure up to others’ expectations. Your worth isn’t determined by your performance but by His love for you.
Bible Verse
‘And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”‘ – Mark 2:5
Reflection Question
What religious performances have you been relying on to feel accepted by God?
Quote
“Jesus was in effect declaring war on every human man made religion all time. Because what he was saying was not that I am one of many who has authority to forgive sins. He was saying, I am the only one who has authority to forgive sins.” (Pastor Jerry Madden)
Prayer
Jesus, thank You for declaring war on performance-based religion. Help me rest in Your acceptance rather than striving for it through my own efforts.
