Devotional

Life doesn’t come with a guarantee of smooth sailing, even for those who follow Jesus. The disciples learned this firsthand when they found themselves in a fierce storm on the Sea of Galilee, despite having Jesus right there with them. It’s tempting to think that faith should shield us from difficulty, but that’s not how life works. We live in a broken world as broken people, which means storms are inevitable. Whether it’s health challenges, financial stress, relationship struggles, or simply the reality of aging, everyone faces turbulent seasons. Following Jesus doesn’t eliminate these storms – it may even bring new ones as we go against cultural currents. But here’s the encouraging truth: having Jesus with us changes everything about how we navigate these difficult times. The storm doesn’t define our story; His presence does.

Bible Verse

‘That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.’ – Mark 4:35-41

Reflection Question

What storms are you currently facing, and how might knowing that Jesus is with you in the boat change your perspective on them?

Quote

Following Jesus will not exempt you from the storms of life. I’m glad you’re following Jesus. But don’t follow Jesus thinking that’s going to make your life easy and exempt you from the storms of life.

Prayer

Lord, help me remember that storms don’t mean You’ve abandoned me. Give me peace knowing that You’re with me in every difficult season of life.
