Devotional
Zechariah had a vision that is both jarring and deeply hopeful. He saw the high priest, the most religiously prepared man in all of Israel, standing before God. And his clothing was filthy. Not just dirty. The word used describes something covered in human waste. This was the man who had done everything right. Every ritual. Every preparation. Every requirement. And still, standing in the presence of God’s holiness, His best was not enough. That image is meant to free you, not shame you. Because if the high priest could not clean himself up sufficiently, neither can you. And neither can anyone else. The standard of God’s holiness is not something human effort can reach, no matter how sincere or sustained that effort is. This is not bad news. It is actually the most liberating truth you will ever encounter. You are not failing because you are not trying hard enough. You are simply human. And God has always known that. He did not set the bar high to watch you fall short. He set it high so that when you finally stopped straining to reach it, you would look up and find that He had already come down to meet you.
Bible Verse
“He showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at His right hand to accuse Him.” – Zechariah 3:1
Reflection Question
Where in your life are you still straining to be “good enough,” and what would it feel like to finally let that go?
Quote
“You can’t clean yourself up. The holiness of God is so rich that compared to His holiness, your best is absolute filth.”
Prayer
God, I confess that I cannot clean myself up no matter how hard I try. Thank You for not waiting on me to get it right before You moved toward me. Amen.
