Devotional

Jesus was direct about what following Him requires. Deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow Me. There is no version of discipleship that skips the first step. Self is the great obstacle. Not your circumstances. Not other people. Self. The ego that needs to be right. The pride that refuses to apologize. The preferences that quietly shape every decision. The desire for comfort that makes sacrifice feel unreasonable. Self does not disappear on its own. It has to be surrendered, daily. This is not a popular message, and it is not an easy one. But it is a freeing one. Because so much of the exhaustion we carry in life comes from the constant effort of protecting self, defending self, and promoting self. It is a full-time job that never pays what it promises. Jesus is not asking you to become less of a person. He is asking you to stop letting self sit on the throne of your life. When self steps down, something far better takes its place. You were not designed to carry the weight of your own ego. You were designed to carry a cross, and there is a difference. One crushes you slowly. The other leads somewhere.

Bible Verse

“For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it.” – Mark 8:35

Reflection Question

What is one area of your life where self is sitting on the throne, and what would it look like to surrender that to Jesus today?

Quote

“Self is the friend of Satan. Self, my ego, my pride, my preferences, my wants. Self is the ally of Satan.”

Prayer

Lord, I confess that I hold tightly to my own preferences and pride more than I realize. Give me the courage to loosen my grip and let You lead. Amen.
