Devotional

Loving God with everything you have is one thing. Loving your neighbor as yourself is where it gets personal. Your neighbor is not just the person next door. It is the coworker who gets on your nerves. The family member who has hurt you. The stranger whose life looks nothing like yours. Loving them the way you love yourself is not a small ask. It is one of the most costly things Jesus ever called us to do.

Forgiveness is a good example of what this kind of love actually looks like in practice. When someone wrongs you, there is a cost. The offense is real. Forgiveness does not pretend it is not. It simply says that the relationship matters more than the debt. Someone has to absorb the cost, and love chooses to be that someone.

This is exactly what God did for us. He absorbed the cost of our offense so that nothing would have to separate us from Him. That is the model. That is the standard. Loving your neighbor well is not about having warm feelings toward everyone. It is about making a choice, again and again, to value people the way God values them. It is hard. But it is also one of the clearest ways we reflect the character of God to a watching world.

Bible Verse

“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” – Leviticus 19:18

Reflection Question

Is there someone in your life right now whom you are finding it difficult to love? What would it look like to absorb the cost of that relationship instead of keeping score?

Quote

“Forgiveness is born on the back of offense. And somebody has to pay the cost for the offense that took place. And forgiveness says, I will absorb the cost because you are more important to me than whatever it is that has separated us.”

Prayer

God, give me the courage to love the people in my life the way You love me. Where I have been keeping score, help me choose forgiveness instead. Amen.
