Key Scripture:
“Then Boaz said to the elders and all the people, ‘You are witnesses this day that I have bought all that belonged to Elimelech… Also Ruth the Moabite… I have bought to be my wife…'” — Ruth 4:9–10 (ESV)
Devotional Reading:
Under ancient biblical law, a widow who lost her inheritance required a “Kinsman-Redeemer”—a close relative who was both eligible and willing to pay the redemption price. While another relative declined because of the personal cost, Boaz stepped forward willingly. He paid the full price to restore Naomi’s land and took Ruth as his wife, restoring their dignity, security, and future.
This story paints a clear historical picture of the gospel. Mankind was spiritually bankrupt, having lost its standing through sin. Jesus Christ became our true Kinsman-Redeemer by taking on flesh, drawing near as our brother, and paying the ultimate price on the cross. He did not view the cost as too high; instead, He gave His life to redeem us and grant us full access to His eternal kingdom.
Reflection Questions:
- How does Boaz’s willingness to pay the price deepen your gratitude for what Jesus did on the cross?
- What does it mean for your daily identity to know that Jesus has redeemed you fully?
Action Step: Share the message of your Kinsman-Redeemer with a friend, family member, or coworker this weekend.
Prayer: Jesus, my Redeemer, thank You for paying the price I could never pay for my redemption. Thank You for taking me out of spiritual poverty and granting me an eternal inheritance. May my life honor the incredible sacrifice You made for me. Amen.
