Scripture:

“But Elimelech, the husband of Naomi, died, and she was left with her two sons. These took Moabite wives… They lived there about ten years, and both Mahlon and Chilion died, so that the woman was left without her two sons and her husband.” — Ruth 1:3–5 (ESV)

Devotional Reading: Elimelech’s move to Moab was originally intended to be a quick, temporary trip—a short “sojourn” to get through hard times. He likely told himself that his family would visit Moab, gather food, and return home swiftly. Yet verse 2 reveals a tragic shift: “they went into the country of Moab and remained there”. What began as a brief detour turned into a decade-long stay, resulting in tragedy, displacement, and death.

Spiritual drift rarely happens overnight; it begins with a subtle compromise. We tell ourselves we are just taking a short break from church, stepping back from ministry, or flirting briefly with a worldly habit. But sin is sticky. Small compromises cling to us and gradually become permanent fixtures in our lives. Taking a break from spiritual disciplines often leads to staying away entirely. Elimelech intended to stay briefly, but Moab became his graveyard. Do not underestimate the power of small detours. Stay rooted where God has planted you, and refuse to entertain compromises that pull you away from His body and His presence.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Have you ever intended to take a short “break” from a spiritual discipline, only to find yourself distant from God months later?
  2. What subtle compromises are currently threatening to entangle your spiritual walk?

Action Step: Recommit to a fundamental spiritual discipline today, such as daily Bible reading, prayer, or faithful church attendance.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, keep me from drifting away from Your presence and Your church family. Give me the courage to cut off small compromises before they become permanent footholds in my life. Amen.
