Devotional
We often struggle with honoring our parents because we focus on their imperfections. Maybe they made mistakes, weren’t always there, or didn’t meet our expectations. But God’s command to honor our parents isn’t based on their performance – it’s based on their position. This truth brings both challenge and comfort. It challenges us to look beyond human failings and respect the office of parenthood itself. It also comforts us as parents, knowing that our own imperfections don’t disqualify us from deserving honor. When we embrace this perspective, we free ourselves from the burden of perfect performance and open our hearts to grace.

Bible Verse
“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.” – Ephesians 6:1

Reflection Question
How might your relationship with your parents change if you focused on honoring their position rather than judging their performance?

Quote There has only been one perfect parent, and it’s not us. And where parents have fallen short, we would do well and honorable to forgive them, because we’ve all fallen short, too.

Prayer
Lord, help me separate the office of parenthood from human imperfections. Give me grace to honor my parents despite their shortcomings, just as You love me despite mine. Amen.
