Devotional

When Jesus revealed that He knew about the woman’s five marriages and current living situation, she tried to change the subject. Her shame was exposed, and her instinct was to wall off that painful area and redirect to safer religious topics. But Jesus hadn’t come to pile on more shame – He had come to liberate her from it entirely. This woman’s story is our story. We all have areas of our lives marked by failure, poor choices, or deep regret. And like her, we often try to keep those areas hidden from God, as if He doesn’t already know. We compartmentalize our lives, giving God access to the ‘good’ parts while keeping the broken parts locked away. But Jesus doesn’t come to condemn us for our past; He comes to free us from it. He takes our worst mistakes and transforms them into His greatest victories. The woman who came to the well in shame left as an evangelist, running to tell others about the man who knew everything about her and loved her anyway. When we truly understand that Jesus bore our shame on the cross, we can stop hiding and start healing. We can let Him into every room of our hearts.

Bible Verse

‘Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”‘ – John 4:10

Reflection Question

What area of shame or regret in your life are you keeping walled off from Jesus’ healing touch?

Quote

If only you knew who it was standing before you. You’d quit walling off areas that he wants to heal. And you’d say, heal all of me.

Prayer

Jesus, thank You for bearing my shame so I don’t have to carry it anymore. Help me trust You with every broken part of my story, knowing You came to heal, not condemn.
