Devotional
When God finally spoke to Job after chapters of debate and questioning, His response was surprising. Instead of explaining why Job had suffered, God asked Job a series of questions that revealed the vast difference between human understanding and divine wisdom. ‘Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation?’ God asked. ‘Have you ever given orders to the morning, or shown the dawn its place?’ The message was clear: Who do you think you are? This can feel harsh at first, but it’s actually profoundly comforting. If God had to explain every decision to us, He wouldn’t be God – He’d be our equal, subject to our approval and understanding. The fact that God owes us no explanation is what makes Him trustworthy. His ways are higher than our ways, His thoughts higher than our thoughts. Job had been demanding an audience with God, confident that if he could just present his case, God would vindicate him. But when he encountered the Almighty, his questions melted away. He didn’t receive the answers he thought he needed; instead, he received something far better – a fresh revelation of who God is. Sometimes our greatest need isn’t for understanding but for a renewed vision of God’s majesty and sovereignty. This doesn’t mean we can’t bring our questions to God or that He’s indifferent to our pain. But it does mean that our peace can’t depend on having all the answers. True faith trusts God’s character even when His ways are mysterious.

Bible Verse
‘Then the Lord spoke to Job out of the storm. He said: “Who is this that obscures my plans with words without knowledge? Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me.”‘ – Job 38:1-3

Reflection Question
What questions have you been demanding God answer, and how might releasing the need for those answers actually increase your peace?

Quote
“God’s explanation to Job never came because God owes no one any explanation. He’s God.”

Prayer
Father, forgive me for the times I’ve demanded explanations from You as if You were accountable to me. Help me to trust Your character even when I don’t understand Your ways. You are God, and I am not – and that’s exactly as it should be. Amen.
