Devotional
What if everything you thought you knew about God’s emotions was incomplete? Many of us grew up thinking of God as stern, distant, or perpetually disappointed with humanity. But the baptism of Jesus reveals something revolutionary about God’s character – He is genuinely, deeply happy. When the Father speaks over Jesus, declaring His pleasure and delight, we hear the voice of a God who is filled with absolute joy. This isn’t a God who created us because He was lonely or needed something to make Him complete. He already possessed all the joy, fellowship, and glory He could ever need within the perfect relationship of the Trinity. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit have been enjoying each other’s company in perfect contentment for all eternity. God didn’t create the world to get something from us – He created it to express His joy to us and invite us to share in it. This changes everything about how we approach our relationship with Him. We don’t have to perform to make God happy; He’s already overflowing with happiness. We don’t have to earn His approval; He delights in us because of who He is, not because of what we do. When we understand that God is fundamentally joyful, it transforms our faith from duty into delight, from obligation into celebration.
Bible Verse
‘Remember the former things of old; for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me, declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, “My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose.”‘ – Isaiah 46:9-10
Reflection Question
How would your daily relationship with God change if you truly believed He is fundamentally happy and delights in you?
Prayer
Lord, forgive me for the times I’ve seen You as angry or disappointed rather than joyful. Help me to understand Your true nature – that You are filled with absolute joy and contentment. Let this truth transform how I approach You each day. Amen.
