Devotional

There is a quiet lie that creeps into the life of almost every churchgoer. It sounds something like this: if I just do enough, God will be pleased with me. It is subtle. It does not announce itself. It shows up as guilt when you miss a Sunday, or as pride when you serve consistently. Over time, your relationship with God starts to feel less like grace and more like a performance review. Jesus confronted this directly with the Pharisees. They were meticulous. They were disciplined. They were committed. And yet He said their worship was hollow because their hearts were far from Him. Religious activity had replaced genuine connection. This is not just an ancient problem. It is alive and well today. The longer you are in church, the easier it becomes to measure your standing before God by what you do rather than by what He has done. But here is the good news: God is not grading your performance. He is inviting your heart. You do not have to earn your way into His presence. You are already welcome because of Jesus, not because of your track record. Rest in that today. Show up not to impress God, but simply to be with Him.

Bible Verse

“There is nothing outside a person that by going into him can defile him, but the things that come out of a person are what defile him.” – Mark 7:15

Reflection Question

How would your daily spiritual life look different if you truly believed God’s acceptance of you had nothing to do with your performance?

Quote

“The longer you are in church, the easier it is for you to start to believe you are accepted based on your performance.”

Prayer

Father, forgive me for the times I have tried to earn what You have already freely given. Teach me to come to You with an open heart, not a resume. Amen.
