Devotional
Every person you encounter today—the barista who makes your coffee, the coworker who frustrates you, the family member who knows exactly how to push your buttons—bears the image of God. This profound truth should transform how we speak to and about others. When we gossip about a colleague, complain about a spouse, or speak harshly to our children, we’re directing those words at someone created in God’s likeness. Our words carry even greater significance when we realize who we’re really speaking to and about. God’s command against false witness isn’t just about honesty—it’s about honoring His image in others. Speaking genuinely and kindly to people acknowledges their inherent worth and dignity as God’s creation. Even when correction is necessary, it should be delivered with respect for the divine imprint they carry. Today, before you speak to or about someone, pause and remember: this person bears God’s image. Let that awareness guide your words. Speak as if God Himself is listening—because He is. Your words have the power to affirm the value God has placed in each person you encounter.
Bible Verse
“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” – Ephesians 4:29
Reflection Question
How does recognizing others as image-bearers of God change the way you might speak to difficult people in your life?
Quote
” When you speak to and about people, you are speaking to and about those made in the image of God…And so what you say to them and what you say about them matters to God.”
Prayer
Lord, open my eyes to see Your image in everyone I meet today. Guard my lips from speaking words that diminish or damage others. Help me to honor You by honoring those You’ve created. May my words build up and benefit those who hear them. Amen.
