Devotional

Peter got the answer right. Standing before Jesus, He declared boldly: You are the Christ. It was the correct answer, and it came straight from his heart in that moment. But just a short time later, Peter pulled Jesus aside and rebuked Him for talking about suffering and death. The Jesus in Peter’s heart was a king who would conquer and promote His followers, not one who would go to a cross. His mouth said one thing. His heart wanted something else entirely. If we are honest, most of us know exactly what that feels like. We know what we should say. We know the right words. But when life gets hard, when the plan does not go the way we hoped, when following Jesus costs us something real, something inside us resists. We want a Jesus who fits our expectations, not one who calls us to lay them down. This is not a reason for shame. It is a reason for honesty. The gap between what we declare and how we live is not unique to Peter. It is the common struggle of every follower of Jesus. The encouraging truth is that Jesus did not walk away from Peter when the gap was exposed. He corrected him and kept walking with him. He will do the same for you.

Bible Verse

“He called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: ‘Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.'” – Mark 8:34

Reflection Question

Where in your life is there a gap between the Jesus you declare and the Jesus you are actually following day to day?

Quote

“What you say on Sunday is being drowned out by how you live Monday through Saturday.”

Prayer

Jesus, I want my heart to match my words. Where I have shaped You into something more comfortable, forgive me and show me who You truly are. Amen.
