Devotional
Have you ever stopped to consider how much your words matter? In our fast-paced world of constant communication, it’s easy to forget the impact our speech has on others and ourselves. The ninth commandment reminds us that God cares deeply about what we say. When God commanded, “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor,” He was establishing a fundamental principle: our words carry weight. This isn’t just about avoiding blatant lies in a courtroom. It’s about recognizing that every word we speak matters to God because it affects people made in His image. Think about the words you’ve spoken in the past day. Were they truthful? Kind? Necessary? Or did some slip out carelessly, without consideration of their impact? God calls us to a higher standard—one where our speech reflects His character and brings life rather than destruction. Today, consider the weight of your words. They are more powerful than you might realize. They can build up or tear down, heal or wound, set a forest ablaze or bring refreshing rain. As you go through your day, remember that God is listening, and He cares deeply about what you say.
Bible Verse
“But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.” – Matthew 12:36-37
Reflection Question
How might your relationships change if you truly believed you would give account for every word you speak?
Quote
“We are a generation who talks without ceasing. And if we’re not talking, we’re posting (online) and we say everything and we say nothing and we give no thought to what we say, never realizing our words matter to God.”
Prayer
Heavenly Father, forgive me for the times I’ve spoken carelessly. Help me to remember that my words matter to You. Give me wisdom to speak words that bring life, truth, and healing. May my speech reflect Your character today. Amen.
