Here is a question worth sitting with: what happens to your sense of worth when you can no longer perform the way you once did? Maybe your voice is not what it used to be. Maybe your role at church has changed. Maybe the season of influence you once had has quietly passed. For many people, the answer to that question is bitterness. And that bitterness is a signal. It tells us that our identity was resting on something that was never meant to carry it.
Paul is honest about this. The gifts we treasure, prophecy, knowledge, tongues, they are temporary. Time will silence them. He is not being harsh. He is being kind. He is warning us before we build our lives on something that cannot hold. This is not a reason to despair. It is an invitation to build on something better. Your gifts are good. Use them. But do not let them become the thing that tells you who you are. Because the day will come when they change, and you need something underneath you that does not.
